Last night I watched the film, Dream of Life, an exploration with artist Patti Smith about her life and work. My sister came over to my house with my nephew and brought the movie. We all watched it together. Keely and I had seen Patti live in San Francisco back in 2000 or so, I was 17, we went with our friend Frank and it was a great show. I was inspired at the time by her very clear wildness, which was a cleansing to all in the room.

Last night we all three had the experience, during the film, of realizing more acutely our own place in history and the lives of others and each other. My nephew brought this up first, but I think we were all feeling it. It was such an effective film and I encourage everyone to watch it. This is the film website. And Patti Smith’s own site.

These are my original liner notes from this record. I was living in Los Angeles in Echo Park, in some bungalows that Charlie Chaplin built for actors and crew near the original Hollywood studios. Love songs and sad songs came out of that time and a breakup. I played a few random shows and studied Fine Art and Art Theory and Design at Santa Monica College. I had a cool job at The Silent Movie Theater (now Cinefamily) which is still in going on Melrose Avenue down the street from Canters Deli and Restaurant. I had been writing the record since 2001 and finally and nervously called my friend Jacob Golden in 2003 and asked if he would record and produce it for me. He was living in Portland. I met Jacob when I was about 14 years old and I saw his incredible live shows around California in the music project he was in during that time. I traveled to Portland with Adrienne Spring of Coal Beautiere, and Jacob, Gavin Bowes, June Lord, Adrienne and I proceeded to work on the record and finish all recording within a week. Jacob put a lot of love into this record, changing mixes and adding sounds for another 8 months. There are two records that came out of the recording sessions, some of which were done long distance over the telephone. So much friendship went into the making of this record and I encourage you to give it a listen as well as check out Jacob Golden’s music.

NEWS AND BLUES IN 2011

I am excited to emerge with some material I want to perform this spring, after working on The Stars, the Moon, the Owl, the Cougar, and You, the past two years, having the release pushed back once and once again (finally will release in March!), and it was a difficult record to perform. Yep, I am still working on that pre-1924 blues album, though I want to put more time into it and have something else almost ready to show…

I have been writing for my next release for a long time, and have written some songs for it more recently that fit right in, feel right, and feel good to play live. I play at The Roxy in Los Angeles on February 8th, and a benefit show for Jacob Mingle’s Flannel release with Tiger Friends Collective at the Cozmic Cafe in Placerville on March 5th. Check the events for details!

I am co-writing a biography of Elizabeth Cotten with her great-granddaughter Brenda, who sang and recorded with her as a child. If you have been inspired or affected by Elizabeth’s music, please contact me and tell me how. The more the merrier, the more quotes and stories I have to choose from to include! I am really excited about this.

Still working this year on my film series, Roses for Maya Deren.
